Day 2 of Tokyo Olympics had a mixed overall result in store for India as boxer Mary Kom, shuttler PV Sindhu and paddler Manika Batra registered wins but at the same time Sania Mirza and her women’s doubles partner Ankita Raina were ousted out in the first round, men’s hockey team lost and the bad run for shooters continued.
Badminton: India’s PV Sindhu began her Tokyo Olympics campaign with a dominant win in her group-stage match on Sunday at the Musashino Forest Plaza. The 6th seed defeated Israel’s unseeded Ksenia Polikarpova in straight games — 21-7, 21-10 — in just 29 minutes.
Tennis: Sania Mirza and Ankita Raina were knocked out in the first round of women’s doubles at the Tokyo Olympics by Ukranian twins Nadiia and Liudmyla Kichenok. Sania and Ankita had won the first set by holding their opponents to love and were leading 5-2 in the second set and yet went on to lose the match 6-0, 6-7, (8-10).
Table tennis: Manika Batra came from two games down and then forced the match into a seventh game to stage a remarkable win over Ukraine’s Margaryta Pesotska in the women’s singles second round at the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday. The final score read 4-3 (4-11, 4-11, 11-7, 12-11, 8-11, 11-5, 11-7) in Manika’s favour after a match that lasted 57 minutes.
Men’s hockey: India suffered a crushing 1-7 defeat to a ruthless Australia on Sunday in men’s hockey at the Tokyo Olympics. India conceded three goals in five minutes during the second quarter, all but ending their chances at beating the top-ranked team.
India had earlier beaten New Zealand 3-2 in their opening match of the Olympics. They face Spain next on Tuesday.
Rowing: Rowers Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh produced an impressive performance on Day 2 of the Tokyo Olympics to become the first Indian pair to qualify for the men’s lightweight double sculls semifinals on Sunday.
Arjun and Arvind clocked a time of 6:51.36 to finish third in the repechage round 2 and reach the semis at the Sea Forest Waterway in Tokyo. The pair had finished fifth in their heats of the lightweight men’s double sculls event on Day 1.
Boxing: Mary Kom stormed into the pre-quarterfinals of the Flyweight Women’s category after beating Hernandez Garcia, a 23-year-old from the Dominican Republic 4-1. Mary outpunched her opponent in the 3rd and final round after opening her bout on a cautious note. The 38-year-old was in her element as she unleashed a flurry of punches in the final round to win the bout by split decision.
Later in the day, there was disappointment in store for Indian boxing fans as Manish Kaushik crashed out of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after losing a close bout against Luke McCormack in the men’s lightweight (63kg) category in the Round of 32 on Sunday.
Shooting: Manu Bhaker missed the 10m Air Pistol Women’s Final berth by a real whisker. The World No. 2 finished the qualification with 575 points and at the 12th spot in the 53-woman field. Also, World No. 1 Yashaswini Deswal finished with 574 points and at the 13th spot while the top 8 qualified. In fact, France’s Celine Goberville took the final qualification spot with a score of 577 and 15X.
Indian shooters continued to fail to live up to expectations as teenage shooter Divyansh Singh Panwar, and Deepak Kumar finished well outside the qualification spots in the 10m Air Rifle Men’s Qualification Round at Tokyo Olympics.
